1260 Receives Housing for Everyone Award from TD Charitable Foundation
Thursday, December 15, 2011
We’re thrilled to announce that 1260 Housing Development Corporation was recently selected as a winner of TD Charitable Foundation’s 2011 Housing for Everyone competition. The TD Charitable Foundation is the charitable giving arm of TD Bank.
The Housing for Everyone grant competition is one of the TD Charitable Foundation’s most widely known signature programs. The competition invites local non-profit organizations from Maine to Florida to submit proposals outlining their plans and efforts to support and provide affordable housing initiatives in their communities. This year’s Housing for Everyone theme was Building for the Future, focusing on three critical areas in affordable housing: energy efficiency, capacity building, and new unit creation. Twenty-five organizations throughout TD Bank’s footprint from Maine to Florida were awarded a $100,000 grant for a total grant donation of $2.5 million in 2011.
1260’s grant will support our efforts to increase energy efficiency in affordable housing. Specifically, these funds will contribute to a moderate rehabilitation in one of our West Philadelphia properties featuring upgrades that will improve energy efficiency, including new Energy Star labeled windows, light fixtures and kitchen appliances. All of the individuals living in this property are economically stressed and living below poverty. Many of these men and women are individuals with special needs.
In 2008, 1260 and its nonprofit affiliates in the CPM Housing Group made an organizational commitment to green building. To date, eight of 1260’s affordable housing projects in Philadelphia have achieved Enterprise Green Communities designation. Two of these projects received LEED certification, including the newly dedicated Temple II North Gratz Street Development, which achieved LEED Platinum status.
Our green building practices not only help to improve health and quality of life for our tenants, they have economic benefits as well. Every dollar saved in monthly utility bills means additional income for our tenants. We hope this savings helps our tenants to achieve a greater level of independence and community participation.
We are extremely grateful to the TD Charitable Foundation for supporting this important aspect of our work.Labels: energy efficiency, preservation, rehabilitation, TD Charitable Foundation, West Philadelphia
